THE LANKYKATS SPIRIT..
NEWSLETTER.
November Winter 2011
Hi Lankykats
The Launch night went great.. now to improve.. Thanks to all the bands who played at the Lankykats Launch - you made rock ‘n roll history!
Lighting and background music.
Norman Unity showed me the overhead lighting controls and access to the CD player. I think we missed the background music during change overs. Both will now add to the occasion. Mics’ were not as good as last week so I believe we are to access the main mixing desk for direct connections. All these smaller things will add significantly to the quality of performances on show in future... The Unity Club management have thrown their full weight behind the Lankykats concept which is all too evident as you will see below - Fab you boys.. many, many thanks..
The bands play because they luvvit!
The bands musical playing standards are amazing.. considering the 'new culture' everybody seems to get the buzz from blagging it in some way or other. The ten minute change over is ample. I think it brings out the best playing in people. I spoke to Keith Wright today and he says he was hyper like he's not been for years - so the adrenaline is flowing and it costs next to nowt for a pint of that. No one there is really comparing bands and being critical. They are grateful just to hear and witness rock 'n roll back in raw again.. no gimmicks - nowhere to hide - and we are having fun.. and the Lankykat crowd sense it too!
Lankykats audience:
We now have a captive audience who - like a major rock show, are going to see their favorites and sing and dance their socks off. The audience were a bit reserved just now but that only is to be expected as hardly anyone knew each there apart from the band lads themselves. They will melt..
The immediate future:
I'm expecting many more bands old and new to come out of the woodwork and sooner rather than later. Tony's Bird's band The PACT will be on before Xmas. John Wokky and the The Vaquero's are planning something. John Cross - Brian Webster- John Watkinson's new band will play eventually. Dave Cavey intends to bring his band up soon - he has connections to Wigan's Ovation. Keith will get his mates in the Bluenotes to play. Tom Dick & Harry with Ken - playing sit-down guitar - have begun to buzz. However, it is the 'scratch bands' who for me - have been biggest highlight so far. Mitch, Mick, Gerry, Roy, Keith, Kevin, Jeff and Gaz are naturals and will form the bedrock - The Bedrocks - of Lankykats meetings. You are the ones who will back all the others when they are short of personnel
and form various combinations week in week out, and Lankykats are going to be dependent on you together guys getting us through the tougher times. We've had a flying start and maybe we have not quite peaked just yet, but after xmas-new year maybe we'll see some of the Lankykats novelty wear off. No matter who gets guest 'star' band billing - The Edward John Concern are the next on the 17th - it is The Bedrocks who excite me most. Their potential is x unknown? I will find this the most fascinating to observe in the coming months. I will base each meeting on a named guest band - this is marketing.. It looks much better this way than listing a 'Four Bands Playing Tonight' poster!
Marketing Lankykats:
I will continue to drive the marketing and I have ordered another tall banner to compliment to one already in the post and on it's way. Norman and Peter are doing and paying for an A4 and A3 poster print run based on the A3 Lankykats guitar poster. They will distribute these around local shops, post offices, chippy's etc. They have already done this with one they made earlier. I have had requests from people who want personal copies. In addition I have placed loads of Lankykats stuff on www.wiganworld.co.uk - including ads' and forum thread starters.. go see..
Admission.
Some say we are too cheap at a £1 admission but don't forget everybody pays to get in - including the musicians. Lankykats collected £78 on Thursday night Launch and this money will be accounted for in my 'Little Red Book' which will be available for anyone to access at Lankykats meetings every time we meet - just ask to see it!

| Mucking in:
Many thanks go to Mick for compering - he looks at home and comfortable with this - he passed the audition last Thursday! fabtastic Mick! Tony is a fine front door man. A polite and pleasant greeter with a steel-like grin which says: "Ya don't get past me without paying buster!" Roy is taking care of drums setting-up and emergency sticky tape which relieves me to float around all night doing nothing particular that's visible. I like organising the running order and collaborating and liaising. Tony arrived at 7:00pm lugging the drums and mic' stands on stage before I arrived. The sound control is in great hands with Mitch.. and I know he'll get the best out of it every time we meet. Gerry is a musical rock and will play anything for anybody anytime as long as you call him by his stage name of Gerry 'Sandon'. Keith will muck-in and get on and do whatever is needed for anybody.. We are so lucky to have such an amazing team doing this together thing.. and its all because of rock 'n roll - forever! Alan Turner needs a special mention too for his contribution to Lankykats loan of a bass amp! If ever I met a true and passionate rocker - Alan Turner is it!
Ta! from me.. for now.
Lankykat Bill
PS: I have no worries about the future of Lankykats - it here and here to stay. You or I or any of us can't be there every time.. and already I know I could take a night off and know everything would be a-okay - That is a priceless thing to be able to say at this early stage.. and it truly meant to be a fabulous compliment to you all.. Thank you Lankykats.
PART 2..
Chat Meetings
Yeh.. good idea Roy - to have a chat meeting soon.. I think it's extremely important to do so and as often as poss'. There's a chat meeting Monday night 14 November at 8ish - see you there.
The Unity
Peter Unity says he would like the bar running till 11:45 and the music too.. We will try to keep it going but people start leaving at 11 which is normal.. so we have a Lankykats conundrum!
Gremlins:
Several were at work last Thursday Launch night. A horn blew in the clubs RH speaker cab and Mitch's amp' went haywire! I have said that Lankykats will pay for both repairs but the club has said it's okay. I had my snare drum skin busted..
Good news:
Mitch has agreed with the club to supply his PA rig for future Lankykats use.. Fab..
Trisha Lee will contact Mitch with a view to her singing some Lankykats rock 'n roll with the
Bedrocks soon
House keeping:
I think all the guitar cases and muso's bags should be allocated to the seating area in front of the dressing room door.. otherwise the club will start looking like the inside of the dressing room! That way the 'mess' in confined to one area and security of instruments should be increased. The dressing room is noisy when the bands are playing so tuning up might be a problem to some muso's.
The Ladies:
I have spoken to Pat about encouraging more women to attend Lankykats.. Would tee-light candles on tables be something we could do? Norman.. waddya think?
Raffle:
We could use this to raise money for Lankykats. My thoughts are that Lankykats should eventually purchase and own its own gear apart from personal instrument's. At the moment we are gratefully relying on our muso' and the club-owned stuff for equipment - which make Lankykats vulnerable if it become unavailable. When Lankykats eventually goes in to £surplus - we should consider charitable actions like buying guitars etc for schools, youth clubs etc. I want to avoid official charities for now.. these are highly personal and emotive things. To collect for a charity - you need a licence anyway. A guy came in to collect in the name of a charity last Thurs. Dummy me didn't ask to see his licence.. it could have been anybody taking money off people. How do we deal with this kind of cold-calling charity request anyway.. we are the front line here. Suggestions welcome and what shall we offer as a raffle prize?
Younger bands/people:
We need to encourage! How and who?
Lanky Beat - The Book.
Based on the bands featured on www.lankybeat.com Tony suggested it be sold publicly with the proceeds going to Lankykats. I agree! But the book is expensive at £35 - £45 soft - hard back PLUS shipping at around £5. It's only available on-line from http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/25521
The book has had certain people commenting who think that I might want to make money off their materials and picture contributions to the Lanky Beat website - and are citing copyright ownership to the pics etc - as too can all the people who similarly contributed. I don't want offend so I'd rather keep to my original plan of donating two books. One to Wigan Museum - pending a favorable decision later this month - and the other to The Harris Museum-Library Preston, both for reference and archive purposes. I am considering a third one going into Blackburn or Burnley Library. I own a copy too. The Lancashire Evening Post are doing a piece on this for 'The Retro' section and The Wigan Evening Post similar so Lankykats will get a good mention in both..
Finances:
I employ an accountant to do my personal finances.. I can include Lankykats Accounts in this also.
Morcambe: Lankycats Do Lancashire Day:
I have press released this to the media including Granada Reports and North West Tonight as well Radio Lancashire and a the local newspapers. I have ordered new Lankykats banners and posters for Gary at The Park Hotel - I think that he thinks - that this will not be his first and last Lankykats do here! And I agree...
Also, Pat and sister Karen are getting a bus-up from Wigan for our millions of fans to travel to Morcambe. £5 deposit; ring Pat to book on 01942 702962. In addition, a special deal has been struck for attending Lankykats on the night of the 27 November.. Only £30 per room excluding breakfast - a real bargain! Lancashire Hotpot will be available too.. Will keep you posted..
